FreeBSD 4.3 is now in release candidate mode

By Jeremy C. Reed

FreeBSD 4.3 Release Candidate 1 is now available. According to a posting from FreeBSD's release engineer, Jordan Hubbard, two more release candidates will be available on the first two Mondays of April -- and the official 4.3-RELEASE is planned for April 15.

A release candidate is basically the same as the upcoming official release. It is in a code freeze and usually only critically important changes are made to a release candidate. Hubbard's posting says:

If we break this into three checkpoints, each on a Monday, we have a full week for people to synchronize themselves on that RC and make sure that: a) Any bugs they reported in the previous week are gone and b) There are no new bugs they can find.

This is a minor release and is basically a snapshot of the -STABLE branch. The last minor release was 4.2 in November, 2000. The next major release will be 5.0 (and is based on -CURRENT). (The 4.0 major release was in March, 2000.)

FreeBSD 4.3-RC1 is available via ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/4.3-RC1/. A CD ISO image is available via ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/ISO-IMAGES/.
